High-Flavor Non-Alcohol Drinks at Thirsty Fox Pub & Grill in Albert Lea, MN
Order a non-alcoholic drink at most pubs and you get an afterthought — a soda, a watered-down mocktail, a shrug. At Thirsty Fox Pub & Grill in Albert Lea, the non-alcohol menu got the same obsessive attention as everything else, because flavor is the entire point of this place. Here’s how a local pub in southern Minnesota built a no- and low-alcohol program worth ordering from on purpose.
The Whole Point Is Flavor
What started this pub was a simple conviction: bring high flavor to everything we do. The Midwestern food-and-drink culture we grew up in felt a little short on flavor options, and it was time for a change.
Bringing flavor to food was easy — that’s where our deepest experience lives. Craft beer was easy too, given our brewing background. Cocktails were easy by their very nature, since they’re built entirely on the exploration of flavor and flavor combinations. The genuinely tricky part was bringing that same passion into non-alcohol offerings.
Alcohol does something specific in a drink: it acts as a flavor enhancer, particularly on the finish and aftertaste. Take the alcohol away and you change the entire dynamic — much of the flavor goes with it. Solving that, rather than ignoring it, is what makes this menu different.
Non-Alcohol Beers Worth Drinking
Non-alcoholic beer used to mean simple, boring, and hard to source in any drinkable form. That’s changed dramatically. Craft breweries have entered the space with genuinely thoughtful offerings, and Thirsty Fox now carries several of the best:
- Fresh Squeezed IPA NA — Deschutes Brewery. This one matches its full-strength sibling for flavor and drinkability. Quality and taste make it a top recommendation.
- Free Wave Hazy IPA NA — Athletic Brewing Company. Another top recommendation.
- Easy Eddy Hazy IPA NA — Big Grove Brewery.
- Run Wild IPA NA — Athletic Brewing Company.
- Gold Rush NA — Boston Beer Company (Sam Adams).
- Clausthaler NA — the classic German non-alcoholic beer.
- Nialis IPA NA — Summit Brewing Company.
- Guinness 0 — Guinness.
From flavorful IPAs to flavorful lagers, these well-made options blur the line between traditional craft flavor and contemporary non-alcoholics. Brewers were initially reluctant to enter a category that’s technically difficult to brew while retaining flavor — but brewers are relentless experimentalists, and once customers spoke up, they dove in headfirst. The category is expanding fast, and we keep pace with it.
Non-Alcohol Cocktails, Customized in House
Thirsty Fox keeps five non-alcohol cocktails on the menu, each one developed here rather than pulled from a template:
- Ba-nie-nie
- Sailor’s Moscow Mule
- Shirley Temple
- Ginger Peach Soda
- Nutty Sailor
Beyond the listed five, the bar continually innovates and will build a non-alcoholic version of nearly any cocktail on request. Several of our bartenders are highly experienced, and a few are full mixologists — capable of formulating complex new drinks on the spot. For us, cocktails are a continually shifting craft hobby we share with our customers, and that includes the no-alcohol side. We also make non-alcohol Daiquiris, Piña Coladas, and more — just ask your server or bartender.
Low-Alcohol Options: The Menu Opens Wide
If you can enjoy a very small amount of alcohol — typically under 3% — the options genuinely open up. Most flavored liqueurs pack intense flavor while carrying lower alcohol themselves, which lets us build a much broader range of drinks. Our standard low-alcohol cocktails include:
- Desert Sunrise
- Caribbean Beach Drinker
- Captain at Sea
- Tropical Screwdriver
- Mimosa
- Irish Iced Tea
As with everything here, if you have an idea or want to try something different, ask. We don’t always have a mixologist on every shift and can’t promise every custom request, but you’ll be surprised how eager the staff is to experiment. When one of our lead bartenders is working, there’s nothing they love more than building something new for you.
Why This Matters
A non-alcohol menu built with this much care is rare anywhere, and rarer still in a Freeborn County pub. Whether you’re a designated driver, taking a night off, or simply someone who appreciates a great-tasting drink without the alcohol, the goal is the same one that drives the rest of the menu: real, satisfying flavor, made deliberately. Travelers pulling off I-35 and regulars from around Albert Lea alike tend to be surprised that the zero-proof glass in front of them tastes this good. That surprise is exactly what we set out to create.
Ask Us What to Try
The best entry point is a conversation — tell your bartender what flavors you like and whether you want zero-proof or just low, and let them steer you. Take a look at the full drink menu, pair it with something from the kitchen, or reserve a table for the group. Curious how the full-strength side works? The cocktail program is built on the same philosophy.
